Deck stair stringer rot is a common problem. I run into this problem fairly often as a Deck guy. Several factors come into play when this happens. Do your sprinklers soak your Deck stairs when they run? Are your stringers sitting in puddles when it shuts off?

I see this happen a lot, usually when this is happening it goes unnoticed. Especially if your doing regular maintenance on your deck. I will have to eventually replace the stringers. The foot or toe of the stringer is usually where you will see this rot. Sometimes the rot extends upwards affecting the lower steps first.

Ideally you wouldn’t place a piece of wood like your stringer directly on the ground this way when it rains or snows your wood won’t just be soaking in the water. Some planning can help prevent this from happening like building your steps on top of concrete. Or setting them on top of pavers.

Using pressure treated lumber is one of the biggest thing you can do to get the most life you can out of your next Deck steps. This won’t make them last forever but will give you the longest life possible. Which is the best you can hope for when Building stairs out of a product that isn’t life time.

Depending on the size and location stair repair can become a little costly. I guess one place you don’t want to cheat on cost is the stairs. Stair safety is a major concern for most in our industry and let’s face it moms everywhere.
